Bandit Level 16 Solution

Bandit level 16 is similar to the previous one, but the port number is hidden between 31000 and 32000, which require us to scan that range to get which port open.

First, let’s login into bandit level 16 machine

ssh bandit16@bandit.labs.overthewire.org -p 2220

with the password we got from the previous level

now, let’s use Nmap to scan the localhost for ports opened between 31000 and 32000

nmap -vv localhost -p 31000-32000

you should get the following results.

Where we have the following ports opened:

now, we need to connect to each one with openSSL, to see which one talks back and reply to us in order to send the current level password

we will use the following command for each port until one of them work

openssl s_client -connect localhost:portnumber

so let’s see which one will work

• 31046 doesn’t work
• 31518 we get a reply, but if we submit the password we get the same password back, so let’s go to next port
• 31691 doesn’t work
• 31790 we get a reply, but if we submit the password we get a private ssh key.

so we will get the following SSH private key that we will use to login into the next machine then we can get the password from /etc/
